The New Human Potential Movement was the first name we gave to what we were trying to do. We were inspired by the original Human Potential Movement which we heard about back in 2005. We are in the process of consolidating all that we do (and are trying to do) into a single entity – The New Human Potential Movement. This will be a small group of yogi-athletes exploring the physical and mental limits of the human body as a means to inspire, educate, and create positive social and environmental change. We have plans to use this as a powerful vehicle and are working with some great people in the industry to make it a viable entity in which like-minded companies and athletes around the world work to create positive change and gain mutual benefit. This is a little ways off, but I think it is important to know where our vision is taking us. I’m sure we’ll be telling you more about this in the future. Our fancy name never caught. Our side endeavor - YogaSlackers - was simply about teaching people how to practice yoga poses on a slackline (kinda like a tightrope). Unfortunately, that name too was never quite understood. Folks all seemed to understand that we all practiced yoga seriously, but to most, the slackers part of the name referred to our unanimous lack of gainful employment. Despite our best efforts to keep our yoga separate from our adventure racing, our slackline separate from our environmental activism, and our chocolate separate from our peanut butter… it was futile. We held on to our individual identities as long as we could. In a twist of irony (considering that the whole lot of us spend as much time barefoot as possible, and have tested the “no shoes, no shirt, no service” policy thousands of times) our racing team’s shoe sponsor, had begun referring to us as Team YogaSlackers in all their press releases, blog posts and website. It caught on. Sponsors that didn’t even know we did yoga started addressing emails with the name. Through it all we’ve been asked the following questions over and over. “What is Team YogaSlackers all about?” and “What exactly do you all do?” So we developed two nice concise answers: What are we about? Extreme living with Awareness What do we do? We do everything: Yoga, slackline yoga, acrobatics, Adventure Racing, whitewater paddling, endurance kayaking, rock climbing, mountaineering, packrafting, snow-kiting, mountain biking, triathlon, AcroYoga, Ultra-running, human powered expeditions, environmental education, competitive swing dancing, rocket science, surfing, and ice-climbing. Our goals as a group have not really changed since those early days of the New Human Potential Movement. Just our name. We try to find yoga in everything that we do (after all it is in our name!), and everything we do is yoga in it’s own way. Mindfulness is everything. In truth, we don’t really know where we are going, but we will share our stories along the way, and memorable ones from our past. It has been a wild ride and we can only imagine what adventures are coming as we continue to play with our limitless potential. Thanks to our friends, familys, and the conscious companies that help make this journey possible.
