Adventure Story
Kayaking High Tide in the Mangroves

Weedon Island Preserve is one of my favorite place to kayak in that it is home to nearly impassable mangrove channels punctuated by large areas of open wind-swept waters that lead to the Gulf of Mexico.

This morning's kayak was invigorating in that the high tide made the mangrove canopy even more of a challenge to negotiate. At some stages, there was less than a foot of clearance between the branches and the surface of the salty water. At times it was so quiet, you could hear the hundreds of thousands of crabs scampering across the mangrove vines. I saw seven (7) different species of bird, two (2) species of crab, a Ray so large that its tail looked more like a baseball bat, countless jumping fish and a pod of dolphins.

For me, Weedon Island always reminds me that you don't have to go to the Amazon to have adventure, you can find adventure and the opportunity to explore right in your own backyard.

Adventure Tips
1. Check the Tide schedule.
2. Bring plenty of sunscreen and Ben's 100 DEET.
3. Carry fresh water.

Yes, my kayak adventure took me on the South Paddling Trail of Weedon Island Preserve, it is about 4 miles round-trip. I have seen canoes on earlier trips. You should check the tide schedule as some areas may be tight to maneuver.

Nice job thank you. I was wondering if this was the same trail as the "south paddling trail", or is yours a shortened version? I have been hoping to bring my canoe out through here sometime. Do you think it would be appropriate, or is a kayak needed?
